Michael Gatkek spent 18 years in a refugee camp in Ethiopia after having to flee his native southern Sudan on foot as a teenager. He is now a pastor in Portland, Maine, and accompanied Dr. Hickam back to his home area of Malakal, southern Sudan in May to conduct pastoral training for 115 pastors in the area. Omega Foundation is the first outside group to visit and assist this area in 20 years. Many Sudanese, formerly displaced, are returning to try to settle again in their homeland. They return with nothing in the way of material goods, and living conditions are extremely poor. Omega was able to establish 2 micro-credit banks with 60 women to give them loans to start a business and provide for their basic needs.
Then in August, Omega Foundation, was able to start 2 more micro-credit banks in Nairobi, Kenya, which is being overrun by refugees from troubled countries around it. Two very capable women are overseeing this endeavor. Naomi Mutava was university trained at UNE in Maine, and returned to her home in Nairobi to work with street children being helped by her father\\\'s church. Naomi is presently working for Barclays Bank and has banking knowledge to help with record-keeping for the micro-credit system. Her mother, Rose, has very strong ties to the needy women in their area and has entrepreneural talents with which she is able to assist them in starting their businesses. Already we are receiving good reports from them about the women\'s success and excellent payment rate. | |
